USCMO Condemns The Recent Attack on State Representative Maryam Khan in Connecticut

Washington, D.C.; (7/2/2023) – The U.S. Council of Muslim Organizations (USCMO), the nation’s umbrella group of national, regional, and local Muslim organizations, strongly condemns the heinous attack that took place on State Representative Maryam Khan in Connecticut on Wednesday, June 28th, 2023. This cowardly act targeted not only a respected representative but also violated the sanctity of a religious holiday.

Maryam Khan is an exemplary public servant who made history as the first Muslim member and the first Muslim woman to be elected to the Connecticut House. Her dedication to her constituents and her unwavering commitment to her role have served as an inspiration to many.

The incident occurred right after the Eid-ul-Adha prayer, which is a time of peace, reflection, and unity for Muslims worldwide. This attack represents a direct affront not just to Ms. Khan but also to the values of our democracy and freedom.

USCMO firmly emphasizes that acts of violence against any individual are completely unacceptable and contradict our shared principles of respect, inclusivity, and tolerance. We implore law enforcement authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into this incident and ensure swift justice for those responsible.

In light of this unfortunate event, we call upon all members of our communities to unite against hate crimes and work towards fostering greater understanding among different faiths and cultures. It is imperative that we cultivate an environment where elected officials can perform their duties without fear or intimidation.

Our thoughts remain with Representative Maryam Khan as she courageously recovers from this traumatic experience. We commend her resilience in continuing to serve her district even in the face of adversity; she stands as a shining example for us all.
