(Washington, D.C. 11/13/2018) The US Council of Muslim Organizations (USCMO) mourns the death of internationally-respected scholar, teacher and influential American Muslim, Dr. Sulayman Nyang. A pioneer in developing and adding to the understanding of Islam in the United States, Africa and the Middle East, Dr. Nyang transcended the role of academic professor. During his lifetime, he wrote, taught and spoke extensively on Islamic, African and Middle Eastern affairs, making highly complex topics practical for both the intellectual and ordinary citizen.

Dr. Nyang has correspondingly contributed significantly to the building of unity among Muslims from all social and cultural backgrounds in America. Through his numerous publications and lectures, Dr. Nyang affected generations of students, colleagues, and many others worldwide. The legacy he leaves behind shall not be forgotten, and may his humility, humanity and patience live on through us all.
